Zero Trust and Cyber Resilience in Ontarios Health Sector

Hi Keith,

Last year at the Government Innovation Showcase Ontario, we had the opportunity to chat with Greg Moshonas, Director of Cyber Security Defense from Ontario Health on zero trust and cyber resilience.

Greg dives into the department's journey toward Zero Trust architecture to enhance cybersecurity resilience across the provincial health care sector. He also demonstrates how Ontario Health is deploying tools, integrating pillars, and advancing their agenda to protect sensitive systems and patient data!

"[In order to foster a forward thinking Zero Trust posture while balancing recourse limitations], prioritize with the resources you have, bite it off one piece at a time.  And just make sure as you bite off each piece, you're still working towards that bigger picture of everything working cohesively together. ”

- Greg Moshonas, Director of Cyber Security Defense, Ontario Health

Here are some key takeaways:

  • Advancing Zero Trust with Pragmatism:
Ontario Health is prioritizing a cohesive Zero Trust strategy, focusing on step-by-step implementation and realistic prioritization over vendor-driven hype.
  • Bridging Technology Gaps Through Vendor Partnerships:
Strong cybersecurity requires more than products—it demands true collaboration. Ontario Health values vendors who act as problem-solving partners, not just solution providers.

  • Using AI Responsibly to Counter Emerging Threats:
While attackers are leveraging AI and automation, Ontario Health is actively exploring AI-driven solutions—internally and through vendor pilots—to strengthen defenses without compromising privacy.
  • Demystifying AI for Cybersecurity Resilience:
Rather than fearing AI, the organization encourages understanding its fundamentals and embracing uncertainty as part of future-proofing cybersecurity strategies.
